Yesterday, in Uvalde, Texas, we witnessed the worst possible outcome that a child or teacher could ever face when 21 precious lives were taken in a horrific act of violence. Our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the families of those harmed, directly and indirectly, by this terrible event. No lives, especially young lives, should ever end in this way.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, our staff and the thousands of caring volunteers we empower and support as one-to-one mentors, collectively serve as defenders of the God-given, innate potential that exists in every child we impact. This evil act is a repudiation of everything we believe and hold most dear in our mission. In the wake of the recent mass shootings in Buffalo and in Laguna Woods, our hearts and spirits are extra heavy.

In this heaviness and grief, we must not lose sight of the unique role that our mission plays: to call out the best possible future for children in our communities. We must remember how our professional staff and volunteers have a unique purview to assist and be there for our kids as they navigate mental health-related issues and tragedies such as the one in Uvalde. Finally, we must remember there is a lot more work still to be done. Thousands of kids in our territories across Texas could benefit from positive mentors in their lives.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, we are creating life-changing relationships that matter now more than ever. Let’s honor the victims of this horrible event by caring for one another a little bit more. Let’s honor them by calling others to get involved in our good mission to create positive change. Everyone can be an agent of positive change in this world. Let’s honor them by loving each other.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star we are committed to the safety of all of our children and we always will be.
